  • Margaret Thatcher | 13 Oct 1925- 8 Apr 2013 | Digital Gravestones

In Loving Memory Of: Margaret Thatcher 13 Oct 1925 - 8 Apr 2013 87 Years Old "The Iron Lady" Your memorial? Click here to edit... Share this Memorial with Friends & Family: Share Memorial on FB Biography: Margaret Hilda Thatcher, Baroness Thatcher, was a prominent British stateswoman who made history as the United Kingdom's first female Prime Minister. Born on October 13, 1925, in Grantham, Lincolnshire, England, she became one of the most influential political figures of the 20th century. Thatcher's political career began as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Finchley in 1959. Her political ascent was marked by her conservative ideology and a determination to implement a series of economic and political reforms that would later become known as "Thatcherism." She was elected as the leader of the Conservative Party in 1975. In 1979, Margaret Thatcher achieved a historic victory, becoming the first female Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Her tenure as Prime Minister, which lasted until 1990, was marked by a series of sweeping policies and reforms that significantly reshaped Britain's economic and political landscape. One of Thatcher's most notable policies was her commitment to free-market principles and the reduction of state intervention in the economy. This approach, often referred to as "Thatcherism," led to privatization of state-owned industries, deregulation, and a focus on individual enterprise. Her economic policies brought about significant changes in the British economy, though they also generated controversy and debates over their social impact. Margaret Thatcher was a staunch advocate for the United Kingdom on the international stage. Her leadership during the Falklands War in 1982 and her close partnership with U.S. President Ronald Reagan during the Cold War era solidified her reputation as a strong and determined leader. However, her time in office was marked by divisions and controversies, particularly concerning her confrontational style and policies that affected various sectors of British society, including labor unions and public services. These policies led to both passionate support and vocal opposition. In 1990, Margaret Thatcher's leadership of the Conservative Party came to an end, and she resigned as Prime Minister. She remained an active member of the House of Lords and continued to be influential in political discussions and public life. Margaret Thatcher passed away on April 8, 2013. Her legacy remains a subject of ongoing debate and reflection, with her impact on British politics, the global economy, and the role of women in leadership being central topics of discussion. Regardless of one's perspective on her policies, she undeniably left an indelible mark on the history of the United Kingdom and the world. In the eighties Shirley Anne met up again with Stephen Frears, with whom she had worked when they were both beginners at the Royal Court. He cast her in My Beautiful Laundrette which was a big success and a breakthrough movie Her next big film was Hear My Song, as Cathleen Doyle, made in the nineties. In recent years Shirley Anne has toured in theatre productions such as The Cemetery Club and Five Blue Hair Ladies Sitting on a Green Park Bench. She was pleasantly surprised at how enthusiastically her performances were received all over the country and how much she enjoyed visiting so many different cities and towns and the wonderful welcome she received. In Loving Memory Of: Barbara Taylor Bradford May 1933 - November 2024 91 Years Old British-American Novelist Your memorial? Click here to edit... Share this Memorial with Friends & Family: Share Memorial on FB Biography: Barbara Taylor Bradford OBE (10 May 1933 – 24 November 2024)[3] was a British-American best-selling novelist. Her debut novel, A Woman of Substance, was published in 1979 and sold over 30 million copies worldwide.[4] She wrote 40 novels, all bestsellers in England and the United States. Barbara Taylor was born in Leeds, West Riding of Yorkshire, England[5] to Freda and Winston Taylor. Her father was an engineer who had lost a leg while serving in the First World War.[6] She attended a nursery school in the Leeds suburb of Upper Armley alongside the writer Alan Bennett.[6] As a child during the Second World War, she held a jumble sale at her school and donated the £2 proceeds to the "Aid to Russia" fund. She later received a handwritten thank-you letter from Clementine Churchill, the wife of Prime Minister Winston Churchill.[7] Her older brother Vivian died of meningitis before she was born. She later described her mother as having "put all her frustrated love into me."[8] Her parents' marriage is fictionalized in her 1986 novel An Act of Will.[6] In her youth, Barbara Taylor read Charles Dickens, the Brontë sisters, Thomas Hardy, and Colette.[9] At the age of ten she decided to be a writer after sending a story to a magazine. She was paid 7s 6d for the story, with which she bought handkerchiefs and a green vase for her parents.[6] Taylor Bradford's biographer, Piers Dudgeon, later uncovered evidence that her mother Freda Walker was the illegitimate daughter of Oliver Robinson, 2nd Marquess of Ripon, a local Yorkshire landowner who employed her mother, Edith Walker, as a servant. Dudgeon informed Taylor Bradford that her grandmother and Ripon had had three children together. After some hesitation, Taylor Bradford allowed Dudgeon to publish this information in his biography.[6] Although initially angry at Dudgeon's discovery, she later said that "I came round. There's no stigma now."[6] Her grandmother later spent time in workhouses,[6] which Taylor Bradford explored in the ITV television series Secrets of the Workhouse (2013).[10] Gallery: Listen To Their Voice: Barbara Taylor Bradford 00:00 / 00:27 Location Of Memorial: Not publicly known Memorial Created By: Anonymous
