Biography:
Margaret Mary Foster, better known by her stage name Meg Johnson, was an esteemed English actress with a remarkable career that spanned nearly six decades. Born on September 30, 1936, in Manchester, England, to Eleanor and Stan Green, she grew up to become a beloved figure in the world of television, theater, and musicals.
Meg Johnson's journey in the entertainment industry began at a young age when she made her stage debut in Bolton during World War II. She displayed her talent and passion for performance, eventually leading her to take singing lessons to address asthma-related challenges.
Her professional acting career commenced in May 1961 when she was cast in the television series "Here's Harry," a role she held until 1964. Subsequent roles in productions like "Family Solicitor" and "The Referees" contributed to her growing presence in the industry.
Meg Johnson's television career included appearances in iconic soap operas. She notably played Eunice Gee in "Coronation Street" from 1981 to 1999, earning recognition and admiration for her portrayal. Her work with Victoria Wood in the 1980s further showcased her talent, solidifying her status as a versatile actress.
In 1997, Meg Johnson took on the role of Mama Morton in the West End revival of "Chicago," adding musical theater to her repertoire. Her contributions to theater extended to productions like "Follies" and "Gypsy."
From 2000 to 2003, Johnson joined the cast of the Channel 4 soap opera "Brookside" as Brigid McKenna, followed by her memorable portrayal of Pearl Ladderbanks in the ITV soap opera "Emmerdale" from 2003 until March 2020.
Outside of her professional achievements, Meg Johnson experienced significant moments in her personal life. She was married to Hibbert Johnson, with whom she had a son and a daughter. Although their marriage ended in divorce, she later married Charles Foster, an English actor and ITV Granada presenter, in 1981, remaining together until his passing on February 23, 2023.
Tragically, Meg Johnson battled dementia during her later years. She passed away on July 1, 2023, at the age of 86 at her home in Rochdale. Her family, in a statement, acknowledged her unwavering spirit and dedication to her craft despite her health challenges.
